The lie put forth by President Obama and then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the Benghazi terrorism of 9/11/2012 was the result of an anti-Islam YouTube video was used in a CBS/AP story posted within hours of the attack.
Howard Baker’s “What did the President know and when did he know it?” question during the Watergate hearings has been used in one form or another in reporting on every scandal and non-scandal since.
And while the phrase obviously applies to President Obama and Hilary Clinton in regards to the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya a new, not so obvious twist on the phrase was discovered while researching my “Character counts” column.
“Who pushed the YouTube video to CBS/AP and when did they do it?”
The lead image is a screen shot of the CBS news.com web story announcing that Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others had been killed the night before in the Benghazi attack.
Notice the time stamp of 6:24 AM, September 12, 2012. That is barely six hours after the attacks ended. Now read the last sentence of the third paragraph in the screen shot below:
“Both incidents were sparked by hardline Muslims protesting a film made in the U.S. which insults the Muslim prophet Muhammad.”
(Publisher note: I have yet to be able to certify whether the above sentence was in the 6:24 posting or added in the updated 9:27 a.m. posting but either time shows the video being pushed from the very beginning.)
While we now know that those on the ground in Libya and C.I.A. in Washington never thought the attack was a result of the video and a spontaneous protest, those facts were NOT known to the general public at the time the CBS/AP story was written.
As Stephen Hayes with the Weekly Standard first reported and Jonathan Karl with ABC News has expanded upon both State and White House personnel demanded editing of the original C.I.A. talking points that ultimately removed all references to terrorism and previous warnings in favor of the “it was the video” narrative.
But that myth took a dozen edits to materialize and was not even finalized until a meeting of White House deputies on Saturday, the 15th. And it was yet another day post attack until Susan Rice went on the Sunday talk shows to officially perpetuate the lie to the world.
This CBS/AP story was written just HOURS after the attack.
Think about that for a moment.
CBS and AP got the Benghazi “it was a video” talking point into their story before half of America had even gotten out of bed that morning.
And while we now know that the C.I.A original talking points stated clearly it was NOT a “protest” over some obscure internet video, CBS/AP had a source somewhere already feeding them the falsehood that would become the administration narrative for the rest of the election cycle.
SOMEBODY at State or the White House was already pushing this false narrative before the CIA draft had even been written!
It’s one thing for the White House to lie to the American public, (this one has perfected it to a level surpassing even Nixon and LBJ) but it’s entirely another when two separate “news” organizations perpetuate it by not verifying and parrot publishes instead.
Someone had to be the source for getting that video talking point inserted so early into the narrative. Put a name to THAT someone and you finally have the starting point of the whole sordid process.
The story byline is only CBS/AP so there is no single reporter to ask who sourced the video lie. But in light of recent truths coming out and more surely to come, maybe, just maybe, someone at CBS/AP who worked on that story will have a moment of conscious and do the right thing as well.
Yes, it’s a long shot but not all hope is lost.
For while the Washington Post of Watergate fame long ago turned in its press credentials for party invitations and the New York Times is still, well the New York Times (it didn’t even put the Benghazi attacks on the front page that day) journalism has not completely died.
We can take solace in the fact that though the likes of Hayes, Karl, Attkisson, Tapper and others may few in number compared to thstee monoliths of thought transcribing against them, their reporting IS getting out, the voices of truth ARE being heard, and with each passing day we become a little more assured that the Benghazi 4 will not have died in vain.
No matter what “news” the NYT and WaPo decide is not “fit to print”.
(And in the “give credit where credit is due” category, I must acknowledge Greg Gutfeld of Red Eye and The Five. He has been saying from the beginning, find out “who pushed the video” and you find the truth. All I’ve done is stumble across a possible starting point.)
