Boehner Retained as House Speaker

Today in Washington Congressman Boehner was reelected Speaker of the House and it looks as if we may have two more years similar to the last couple.  But…the Republicans still have Congress, so things could be worse.  Unless of course you care to listen to president Obama’s adviser Jarrett’s comments from this past year:

“There is going to be hell to pay. Congress won’t be a problem for us this time. No election to worry about after this is over and we have two judges ready to go.” – Valerie Jarrett
It was a close win for Boehner and as he gave his speech after being reelected you could certainly see his emotions coming though and he turned to history, “Maybe it’s time we feel awestruck againThe way our founders envisioned it, the republic would be led by citizens who recognize that the blessing of governing ourselves requires that we give something of ourselves.  Everything depended on this.  So they made each other – and their successors – swear an oath of allegiance …. This covenant makes us servants of posterity.  It calls us to refuse the pull of passing interests and follow the fixed star of a more perfect union. Put simply, we are sent here not to be something, but to do something – to do the right thing.”

With nine Republican congressmen voting against him, Boehner may have been unseated on a second ballot had the number voting against Boehner been doubled.  Among those who didn’t vote with the crowd was New Mexico’s single Republican Representative Steve Pearce.

Steve Pearce is from New Mexico’s southern congressional district two.  He regained his seat in 2010 after a failed bid for U.S. Senate in 2008.  Here is Congressman Steve Pearce’s explanation of his vote.  I am very encouraged by Rep. Pearce’s stand and agree with him completely.
