In long run, Nature beats Leviathan

The Left’s agenda is double-edged: 1) Undermine the civil society to the extent that citizens need to be controlled, and 2) institute a massive state apparatus to enforce said control.

They’ve largely succeeded in their first object. In 2012 America, the ties that bind us are under increasing strain. Faith, family, and vocation are all in decline. Regular church attendance is plummeting. Forty percent of children are borne into broken homes. The labor participation rate is at a 30-year low. All are victories of the countercultural movement begun in earnest in the 1960s.

In short, for many, many Americans, there is little community support left to mitigate the harsh realities of life. No wonder they cede their freedom to an overbearing government, which presides over them with the same suffocating, loving tenderness shown by Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. If you recall, Nurse Ratched loved her patients so much that she had one of them lobotomized so he could live permanently in her care, lest he endanger himself and society as a free man.

From high concentrations of needy Americans arise the most vicious propagandists for the Leviathan. Hailing from urban centers like Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, etc., they are motivated by sympathy for a weak and dependent constituency. They have hubristic views of what government policy can do to “fix” the flaws of human nature, namely inequality arising from circumstances like upbringing, values, talent, industriousness, and luck. To a shrinking cohort of self-sufficient Americans, such views are anathema to the way they lead their lives.

Beware so-called moderates, with their whiny lamentations about the divisiveness of political discourse and their calls for compromise and unity, especially in the wake of tragedies like the Newtown, Connecticut, massacre. The virtue of “getting something done” relies on what that something is, which moderates defer. Truth be told, they’re really engaging in the Leftist version of taqiyya, Arabic for “deception.”

Finding common cause with one’s enemies is what passes for moderate these days. Moderates are America’s modern-day Judenrat, softening up the people to the “benevolent” dictatorship that awaits if only we forget a little more of what makes us unique as human beings. If opposing that is “divisive,” so be it. Division is the consequence of difference predicated by moral and natural law, which we ignore to our peril.

Fortunately and unfortunately, the Left’s agenda is not sustainable. Tyranny superimposed on top of nature will reverse centuries of progress gained from an orderly coexistence with nature. When the state fails, the dependents who ushered it in will be in the most vulnerable position. The evidence is Greece, Michigan, and before that Wisconsin, in the violent, mortal fear Leviathan’s inevitable paring back inspires in its constituents.

By contrast, Americans who maintain strong connections to their communities, despite their seeming redundancy during the Left’s reign, will be more insulated from the collapse and thus slightly better off. This is the furthest extent to which most Americans will “go Galt.”

About Joseph Dooley

I’m 27 years old and I’ve been writing since I learned how to type. I grew up in Texas but I lived nearly 5 years in the belly of the liberal beast, Maryland. Through my writing, I hope to convince readers of the truth and help to reverse the suicidal momentum of the present. As Francis Schaeffer wrote: “Any ways in which the system is still working is largely due to the sheer inertia of the continuation of the past principles. But this borrowing cannot go on forever.” Check out my blog, "Life's complexity and mortal weight."
