From Meet the Press, 11-18-12:
DAVID GREGORY: Senator, there’s more to get to but I have to leave it there this morning. I thank you very much.
SEN. GRAHAM: Egypt. Watch what you do and how you do it. You’re teetering with the Congress on having your aid cut off if you keep inciting violence between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
GREGORY: We’ve covered it all. Senator, thank you for that. I appreciate it very much. Yeah, other than that, have a nice day.
SEN. GRAHAM: I can’t think of anything else to say.
It could be over between Lindsay Graham and Egypt. He met her and liked her enough to spend major money on her. But she doesn’t seem to appreciate it, becomes openly hostile at times, and doesn’t always return his calls. So he pulls back and lets her know he’s mulling whether to continue to lay out the cash to placate her. Missy better watch her step. Now Senator Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina) has openly threatened that if Egypt doesn’t stop inciting violence, she’s risking her foreign aid.
Though I was impressed with Senator Graham’s bold insertion of a warning to Egypt on Meet the Press, the more I checked into this relationship, the more Lindsay reminded me of an abused boyfriend giving it one last try with a very temperamental and fickle girlfriend.
Is this the same sweet Lindsay who said, “If you cut that aid, you’ll be cutting your own throat” in reference to Egyptian aid in February, 2011?
Lindsay may have been having second thoughts in March, 2012 when he said, “While recent developments in Egypt are unnerving, to say the least, I do believe it is in our national security interests to provide assistance to the Egyptian military.” He was supporting Hillary Clinton, who opposed Congressional restrictions on our $1.3 billion in military aid. Looks like his girlfriend (Egypt, not Hillary–are you kidding?) was starting to rattle him but like a good guy, he was in it for the long haul.
Like a gallant suitor, Lindsay rushed to defend the damsel in October, 2012 when Senator Rand Paul threatened her comfortable status of sucking dollars out of the American taxpayer. How dare Senator Paul take out an ad that said, “Joe Manchin works with Barack Obama to send billions of our taxpayer dollars to countries where radicals storm our embassies, burn our flag and kill our diplomats.” On a conference call, Lindsay supported Manchin’s vote to continue aid. Don’t talk about his lady like that, Rand, them’s fightin’ words where Graham comes from. Next you’ll be impugning her honor, and he won’t have it, I tell you!
So now I’m less than awestruck by Lindsay’s better-late-than-never moment on TV, though it could be a sign that boyfriend is waking up from the sensual lure of desert sand, swaying palms, and pyramids. That belly dance may not be doing it for Linds anymore, and he’s noticing the lady is kind of heavy in the hips.
Senator Lindsay Graham may do the right thing after all and vote to cut foreign aid to Egypt, Libya and Pakistan, as Rand Paul has urged. But from what I’ve read about these tempestuous flings–the victim usually keep going back for more, don’t they?
