The minimum wage is a myth. It is a tool of elites to keep the poorest people in this country under their thumb. It also damages our currency and causes inflation. The minimum wage is not what it seems: It doesn’t raise anyone out of poverty. In fact, it has created a permanent unemployed underclass in this country that did not exist prior. The data are there, but those who make the policies choose not to tell you, because doing so removes their power and places it in your hands. Sure, it would be great if every worker in the world earned a good wage, and did a job they loved. but…
The world described by those supporting the minimum wage is socialism, but not the reality of socialism .. just the Utopian ideals of socialism, because there is no way to guarantee one’s success or ‘living wage‘ via government decree without also having government control over individuals/society. And, inevitably, government control over individuals has shown nothing but an increase is misery with a simultaneous decrease in wealth and opportunity.
I highly recommend this classic Firing Line video on Poverty and Dependence. It is a real eye-opener, and wisdom for the ages.
Also, more money means nothing if the value of that money is worth less. If a person earned $15K a year back in the 70′s they could actually live a modestly comfortable life, they would have to earn over $60k a year now to afford the same.
The value of the work is determined by the market.. If the government artificially ‘fixes’ the price of the work for employees at a level that is higher than what it is valued in the free market, then one of three things must happen to compensate:
- The work must improve to meet the value of the new price
- The value of currency must decrease to match the value of the work
- The job must be eliminated/re-formulated to cover the added cost
All three of these are happening, putting more and more unskilled workers out of the job market and into the government system of welfare dependency.
We can ignore the reality, but doing so is leaving generations of poor minorities in America under the thumb of elitists who are using them as pawns in their political games. Progressives spout their talking points, but have no solutions to poverty. All the progressive programs are actually worsening the cycle of poverty and dependence.
Poor people need the TRUTH. They need people who are not sold out to big party bosses, who are not afraid to stand up to the tyranny of the majority to tell them the HARD FACTS about exactly what it will take to get OUT of this sickening cycle of hopelessness and poverty. That truth is… there IS NO EASY SOLUTION. Sacrifice, self-discipline, hard work and dogged persistence are what is necessary to climb out of government dependence hell.

Wow! Great article and great video. Very well put in both. I know it’s overused but this goes back to give a man a fish vs. teach a man to fish. Minimum wage makes mediocrity more comfortable so people don’t apply themselves to rise out of poverty. The left wants to be the ‘nice guy’ and hand everything out to those who aren’t successful. The goal should be a world with NO handouts because people have learned to be successful and to take care of themselves. Thanks for the article Conservative Sue!
Posted by Cucciolo | July 31, 2012, 9:49 amAmen to that. The free market has a natural way of working itself out and balancing with supply and demand. All of this hyper-regulation by government restricts growth.
Posted by Tracy | July 31, 2012, 12:41 pmI get into the debate about the dangers of minimum wage quite often.
I like the argument that the currency actually reaches it’s own value in accordance to the quality of work.
The people that are for the min wage in my social circles simply don’t want to see poor people struggle so hard to make ends meet. While this concept may seem innocuous it ends up hurting everyone in the long run.
I personally see jobs going oversees for much less that minimum wage here in America.
I am not sure why people don’t see how raising the minimum wage drives up the price of the end product and then we end up worse than where we started.
The argument I try is this:
“Lets raise the Minimum Wage to $50 per hour and solve everyone’s problem”. I only receive blank stares. The debate quickly ends, and their minds are not changed. Isn’t that just willful ignorance?
I don’t get why this is so difficult for people to understand.
Awesome Post!
Posted by conrad | July 31, 2012, 12:55 pmOutstanding post…and amazing Thomas Sowell / William F. Buckley. Video. I could listen to these two conservative giants all day. What a shame those who have the power to facilitate the climb from poverty of so many also see that the way to maintain their power and control is to keep the people in poverty. The minimum wage red herring is just another tool in their vast toolkit to be used against real solutions.
Conrad…I love your debate tactics. That made me laugh.
Great comments, and great article, Sue!
Posted by Red Pill Report | July 31, 2012, 3:36 pmThe minimum wage is clearly imposed by people who don’t really understand running a business and paying for the work of employees. If only we could make people understand that in an economy that’s working properly, if an employee’s work is worth more than minimum wage, their employers will pay more than minimum wage. We have to value ourselves enough to gain more than minimum wages skills.
Posted by Gladys | July 31, 2012, 3:47 pmIt is great to hear two very intelligent people discussing true principles so dispassionately. Truth is truth, and doesn’t require great emotion to sell it. Thanks for sharing this discussion of the principles of good public policy.
